In this role you will be responsible for leading the implementing of our strategic technology vision for future controls products and solutions. Working closely with product management, customers, and local ABB units, you will lead a team of development engineers to turn advanced control concepts into real products and applications. The position is available in two Pulp and Paper global R&D center locations:•Dundalk, Ireland•Kista (Stockholm), SwedenOccasional international travel will be required. Your responsibilities
- Lead a team of R&D engineers and support the team in reaching agreed R&D targets.
- Coach team members and develop the team.
- Help manage technologies, platforms, and intellectual property.
- Support the creation of Avanced Process Control (APC) technology and product roadmaps, initiate and drive technology and software product developments using in-depth technical expertise.
- Work with product managers to define scope, features and estimations for new APC products/applications.
- Work directly on development tasks, provide technical leadership, coordinate with other resources and create high quality products within the defined schedules and budgets.
- Capture customer requirements, market and competition information in Advanced Process Control and process optimization domain.
- Work with local ABB teams an customers to trial new developments in the field.
- Provide technical support to regional teams, local units and ensure availability of support and training materials for relevant stakeholders in R&D, support, engineering, marketing and sales.
- Initiate and sustain sharing of best practices and standardized technical solutions within ABB R&D community.
- Actively contribute to industry technical bodies both inside and outside the company.
Your background
- PhD in Control Theory or a related field, or Master's degree with several years' work experience.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in design and implementation of industrial controls software solutions preferably in APC and process optimization domain.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge in multivariable control algorithm development, modeling, and simulation of dynamic systems. Knowledge in optimization, data sciences and machine learning is also appreciated.
- Application domain knowledge in process industries such as pulp & paper.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Modelica, Python.
- Familiar with development models and processes such as Agile, Lean Product Development
- Strong leadership skills.

- Strategic orientation and thinking.
- Ability to cope with changing priorities and multiple assignments.
- Excellent written and spoken English language skill.
