The Process Engineer will develop efficient and reliable formation and aging processes that contribute to the performance and longevity of batteries used in various applications. The role includes in-depth knowledge of battery technology, specifically the Formation & Aging process focusing on material handling and equipment but also on process and recipe development. You will play an important role in liaising with equipment suppliers and working with Northvolt's industrialization and factory design teams to develop and efficiently integrate new equipment and recipes into the process.
In general, you will have long experience in the field and continuously seek opportunities for improvement in formation and aging processes through innovation, process optimization, and adoption of new technologies to stay competitive in the battery industry.
This role requires the ability to work with diverse teams and personalities, time management skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, testing and validation experience, and commissioning experience to improve existing processes in terms of yield, cost, quality, or efficiency.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage process development projects, set process metrics and goals
- Research materials, processes, and technologies
- Plan and execute DOEs, conduct simulations, visualize and analyse data
- Conduct performance testing and evaluation of batteries at different stages
- Support troubleshooting issues and identifying root causes and implement solutions to improve process reliability and quality
- Train Process Engineers
- Define process windows and lead pre-FMEAs with Materials and QA team
- Support industrialization teams in detailed engineering design from concept to site acceptance testing

Skills & Requirements
Education/Experience
- BSc or MSc degree in Physics/Chemistry/Manufacturing Engineering/Process Engineering
- 3+ years of relevant work experience within design and engineering in related fields
- Familiar with DOE, SPC, DFMEA, Lean & QA troubleshooting tools
- Experience using various testing equipment and techniques such as EIS, cycling tests, and accelerated aging tests
- Experience from innovating and scaling production in a fast-growing environment ideally in the Battery, Food, Pharma, Paper & Pulp, Semiconductor, Thin film, Electrochemical or similar industry
- Curious, technically educated, and preferably with a strong problem solving background
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to simultaneously handle different activities
