The University has around 45 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
Description of the workplace
At the Division of Combustion Physics, extensive research focuses on the transition to a sustainable energy system and reduced climate impact. The experimental research, in fundamental studies as well as industrial applications, is primarily carried out using laser-based measurement techniques, but using X-ray- and neutron-scattering techniques, which are included in this position. The position then contributes in strengthening the competence of the division on this field of research. The research at the division also includes modeling and numerical simulations of chemical kinetics and the climate impact of aerosols. Since 2001, the activities have been located in modern premises in the Enoch Thulin laboratory at the Department of Physics, and currently, around 75 people work at the division.
Subject description
Carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen (N) are important climate and environmental factors that are affected by our daily consumption. To achieve sustainable cycles for CO2 and nitrogen, there is a need to develop new methods of management and upgrading that can control their cycle efficiency. Do you want to be part of a European research and innovation project in this development?
The project is focused on the development of a process for management of CO2 and nitrogen based on renewable biomass as raw material. The process includes pyrolysis of biomass, a new combustion concept (so-called MILD combustion) and reforming of added CO2 to generate syngas as fuel. The pyrolysis of biomass also generates biochar, a porous material that can be used to absorb nitrogen, which can used for soil amendment.
The tasks consist of experimental studies of biochar using optical methods as well as X-ray and neutron scattering. We are looking for a candidate who has a genuine interest in developing and applying advanced measurement methods to contribute to solving global problems in the environment, energy and climate area.
Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.
Detailed description of the work duties, such as:
  • You will be responsible for experimental studies of pyrolysis of biomass for the production of biochar. The work includes chemical preparation of specimens.
  • You will be responsible for the characterization of biochar using optical techniques as well as X-ray and neutron scattering.
  • You will be responsible for studies with activation/characterization of bio-char with particular focus on the material's absorption of nitrogen
  • The work is partly intended to be carried out in collaboration with a doctoral student and may therefore include some supervision.

The project is financed by the European Innovation Council (EIC) and is included together with seven other projects with the same overall objective in a so-called project portfolio. The project includes partners from CNR-STEMS (Italy), DTU (Denmark) and RISE (Sweden). Collaboration with colleagues at the Department of Energy Sciences Lund University, as well as with international partners in the project will form a central part of the work. The project therefore involves some travel. There are good opportunities to create an international network with researchers within the project and its other sister projects that are part of the EIC portfolio. In addition, experiments with X-ray and neutron scattering are carried out at international facilities and involve travel.
In addition to the research, the work duties, depending on the applicant's interest, may include:
  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies.
  • Actively seeking external research funding.
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.
Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to candidates who have graduated no more than three years ago before the last day for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.
Additional requirements:
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or related field.
  • Experience in chemical laboratory work.
  • Experience in using analytical lab equipment for characterizing material/samples.
  • Ability to carry out research independently.
  • Ability to collaborate.
Assessment criteria
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.
For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Other qualifications:
  • Experience in experimental optical diagnostics, e.g., spectroscopic techniques.
  • Experience in X-ray and/or neutron scattering. Experimental, analysis methods or some modelling. Alternatively, an expressed interest in learning this category of techniques.
  • Experience in post-processing and analysing experimental data. Preferably with MATLAB/Python or similar tools.
  • Experience from studies of porous materials.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant's experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
We offer
Lund University is a public authority which means that employees get particular benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension scheme.
