Job description

The aim of the research project is to develop methods and design a device for acoustic focusing of protein crystals that can be integrated with state-of-the-art nozzles for serial crystallography. The position includes following tasks: development of microfluidic chips, ultrasonic transducers, acoustic cells, flow regulation, and integration of this hardware in existing 3D-printed nozzles for serial crystallography as well as existing microscopes for 2D-imaging of protein crystals. Work will be performed at the division of Biomedical and X-ray Physics (AlbaNova University Center) in close collaboration with the division of Biophyhsics (Science for Life Laboratory), both belonging to the department of Applied Physics at KTH.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Experience and expertise in designing and using microfluidics.
  • The position requires ability to lead projects and work independently as well as collaborate and communicate interdisciplinary with experts in other relevant research areas. 

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • A suitable background for the applicant is a PhD in applied physics, biophysics, microsystems or related research areas. 
  • It is meritorious to have experience and expertise in sample preparation, experiments and data analysis of serial protein crystallography.
  • It is highly meritorious to have experience and expertise in acoustic manipulation of particles in standing wave systems, ultrasound-related electronics, 3D printing of microfluidic components, as well as microscopy.
  • Teaching abilities
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality

    Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.

About the employment

The position offered is for, at the most, two years.

A position as a postdoctoral fellow is a time-limited qualified appointment focusing mainly on research, intended as a first career step after a dissertation.
